Raspberry Pi Foundation Announces New Online Code Editor

Online Code Editor

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced the development of a new online text-based Code Editor designed for young people aged 7 and up who attend Code Clubs and CoderDojos, students in schools, and learners at home. The Code Editor, currently in beta phase, allows learners to write and run Python code right in their browser without the need for setup. The interface is simple and intuitive, making it easier for beginners to get started with text-based coding. Learners can also save their code using their Raspberry Pi Foundation account, allowing them to easily build on projects they start in the classroom or at home.

Supports the Python Coding Language

Python has been chosen as the first programming language for the Code Editor, as it is popular in schools, CoderDojos, and Code Clubs. It is often the text-based language young people learn when they take their first steps away from block-based programming environments such as Scratch. Python is also widely used by professional programmers and usually tops at least one of the industry-standard indexes that ranks programming languages.

Web Development Languages Coming Soon

In the near future, the Code Editor will add support for web development languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The Raspberry Pi Foundation also plans to add features such as project sharing and collaboration, with safeguarding at the core of their policies.

Users Can Test the Code Editor

The Foundation is inviting users to test the Code Editor during the beta phase of development and provide feedback on what worked well, what didn’t, and what they’d like to see next. The Raspberry Pi Foundation aims to engage millions of young people in learning about computing and how to create with digital technologies by developing the Code Editor with three main aims in mind: supporting young people’s learning journeys, removing barriers to accessing computing education, and making learning to program engaging for more young people.

Further Development

The Code Editor has been generously funded by the Algorand Foundation and Endless, and the Raspberry Pi Foundation is open to partnerships to fund further development.
