OpenAI Rolls Out Advanced Voice Mode with New Features and Voices

Advanced Voice Mode

OpenAI has officially launched its Advanced Voice Mode (AVM) for a wider set of users, bringing more natural-sounding conversations to ChatGPT. This rollout, initially available to paying customers in the Plus and Teams tiers, marks a significant step forward in how users can interact with the AI via voice. Enterprise and educational users are set to receive access in the coming week.

New Design

As part of this update, AVM comes with a fresh design overhaul. A blue animated sphere now represents the feature, replacing the earlier animated black dots that were first showcased in May. Users will see a notification within the app when AVM is available, conveniently located next to the voice icon.

New Voices and Enhanced Personalization

Alongside the design update, OpenAI has introduced five new voices: Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale. This expands the total number of voices to nine, all of which are nature-inspired. The voices have been designed to make interactions feel smoother and more intuitive. Notably missing from the lineup is the voice “Sky,” which was removed after a legal challenge from Scarlett Johansson, who argued it resembled her voice from the film *Her*.

Expanded Customization Features

OpenAI has also introduced expanded customization features, including the ability for users to modify how ChatGPT responds to them through Custom Instructions. In addition, the Memory feature now allows the AI to recall details from past conversations, making ongoing dialogues more fluid and contextually aware.

Improved Accents and Future Features

In this update, OpenAI has addressed some previous challenges with AVM, particularly around understanding accents. The company claims the voice feature is now better at interpreting a wider range of accents, leading to smoother, faster interactions. However, glitches that were present during the initial alpha testing phase have reportedly been reduced, further improving the overall user experience.

No Video or Screen Sharing Features Yet

Although the voice feature continues to evolve, some previously teased features like video and screen sharing are absent from this release. These multimodal capabilities, showcased in the spring, remain without a specific launch date. OpenAI had demonstrated how ChatGPT could process both visual and audio inputs simultaneously, but this functionality is still on hold for the time being.

Limited Availability

Despite these advancements, AVM remains unavailable in certain regions, including the European Union, U.K., Switzerland, and parts of Scandinavia. However, as OpenAI continues refining and expanding its offerings, more regions may see access in the future.

More Personalized Experience With ChatGPT

For now, users of the enhanced voice features can enjoy a more personalized and intuitive experience with ChatGPT, alongside the ability to try out its new nature-inspired voices. ðŸŽ™️🌿
