Margaret is a senior software engineer. Timothy is her junior colleague. They work in a grand Victorian library in London — the kind of place where ideas are taken seriously and hype is shown the door. Timothy has just spent his first evening with Claude Code.
The Morning After
Timothy arrived earlier than usual. Margaret noticed this but said nothing. She waited.
He sat down, opened his laptop, and stared at it for a moment without typing anything.
"You used it last night," she said. Not a question.
"I did." He paused. "It worked."
"And yet here you are looking like a man who has misplaced something important."
He turned to face her. "That's exactly it. I got the result. The code ran. The tests passed. But I sat there afterwards and thought — did I actually do anything?"
Margaret set down her pen. "Good," she said. "That is precisely the right question to arrive with."
What Timothy Was Really Asking
"I'm being serious," he said. "I described the problem, it wrote the solution, I read it through, it looked correct, I shipped it. Where was the skill in that?"
"Where do you think the skill was?" Margaret asked.
"I don't know. That's the problem."
"Walk me through what happened. Precisely."
Timothy thought for a moment. "I had a data pipeline that was timing out on large inputs. I'd looked at it myself for an hour and had a theory about where the bottleneck was. I described the problem to Claude Code — the context, the constraints, the behaviour I was seeing. It proposed a solution. I read it. I understood it. I pushed it."
"Your theory," Margaret said. "Was it correct?"
"Close. The actual bottleneck was one step earlier than I thought."
"And when you read the solution it proposed — how did you know it was correct?"
Timothy opened his mouth and then closed it again.
"Take your time," Margaret said.
"Because I understood what it was doing," he said slowly. "I could see why the change would fix the problem. I could see it wasn't introducing any new issues. I could see it was consistent with how the rest of the system worked."
Margaret nodded once. "That," she said, "was the skill."
The New Shape of Skill
"But I didn't write it," Timothy said. He wasn't giving up easily, which Margaret appreciated.
"No. And the engineer who uses a compiler doesn't write machine code. The engineer who uses a framework doesn't write the HTTP stack. We have always built on tools that handle implementation details beneath us. Claude Code is the next layer. What remains constant — what has always remained constant — is judgment."
"Judgment," Timothy repeated, as if testing the weight of the word.
"The ability to look at a solution and know whether it is correct. Whether it is safe. Whether it will hold up under conditions the tool did not consider. Whether it is the right answer to the right problem." She paused. "That judgment is not given to you by Claude Code. It is not given to you by any tool. It is built over time through careful attention to your craft. And here is what most people are missing right now —"
She leaned forward slightly, which meant something important was coming.
"That judgment has never been more valuable. Not less. More."
The Bar Got Higher
Timothy frowned. "Everyone seems to think the opposite. That AI lowers the bar. That anyone can ship code now."
"Anyone can generate code now," Margaret said. "That is true. Shipping code responsibly is a different matter entirely. When a junior developer writes poor code by hand, the damage is limited by how fast they can type. When that same developer uses Claude Code without judgment, they can generate poor code at extraordinary speed and scale." She sat back. "The floor got lower. The ceiling got higher. And the distance between them grew."
"So the stakes actually went up."
"For those who take the craft seriously — yes, significantly. The developer who brings genuine understanding to this tool is now capable of output that would have been impossible two years ago. The developer who does not is now capable of disasters that would have been impossible two years ago."
Timothy was quiet for a moment, thinking it through. "So it's an amplifier."
"Precisely. It amplifies what you bring. Which means the most important investment you can make right now is not learning prompt syntax or memorising Claude Code commands. It is deepening your understanding of the fundamentals. Systems. Architecture. How things fail. Why code becomes unmaintainable. The things that were always true and will remain true regardless of which tool you are using."
The Question Everyone Is Really Asking
Timothy leaned back and looked at the ceiling for a moment in the way he did when he was about to say something he was slightly embarrassed about.
"Can I tell you what I think people are actually worried about?"
"Please," Margaret said.
"They're not really worried about skill. They're worried about opportunity. Whether there will be jobs. Whether what they spent years learning still means anything. Whether—" he stopped.
"Whether they are still needed," Margaret finished gently.
"Yes."
She was quiet for a moment, and when she spoke it was carefully.
"I have been writing software for a long time, Timothy. I have watched the industry absorb IDEs, version control, cloud computing, containerisation, and a dozen other things that were each supposed to change everything. And each time, the developers who leaned in — who learned to use the new thing deeply and thoughtfully — found that their opportunity expanded rather than contracted."
"And the ones who didn't?"
"Found it harder. Not impossible. But harder." She picked up her pen. "The question is never whether to use the tool. The tool is here. The question is whether you will be the kind of developer who uses it with understanding, or the kind who uses it in hope."
Timothy smiled at that — a real one. "In hope."
"Hope that it is correct. Hope that nothing is missing. Hope that it considered the edge cases. Hope is not an engineering methodology."
What Building Skill Actually Looks Like Now
"So how do I actually build skill in this new world?" Timothy asked. "Concretely."
"The same way you always did," Margaret said, "with one important addition. You read the code. Everything Claude Code produces — you read it. Not to approve it. To understand it. You ask yourself why it made each choice. When you do not know, you find out. You treat every piece of generated code as a learning opportunity rather than a shortcut past learning."
"That sounds like more work than just writing it myself."
"In the short term, sometimes. In the long term, you are learning from a system that has been exposed to an enormous breadth of patterns and approaches. If you pay attention, you will encounter solutions you would not have reached alone. Your repertoire expands." She paused. "The developer who uses Claude Code thoughtfully and reads everything it produces carefully has access to a breadth of patterns and approaches that no previous generation of developers has had at this stage of their career. That is not nothing. The opportunity is genuinely remarkable."
Timothy looked at his laptop with a different expression now. Something had shifted.
"I think I've been thinking about this all wrong," he said.
"Most people are," Margaret said. "That is why we are here."
The Optimist's View
He picked up his tea. "You're actually optimistic about all of this, aren't you. Genuinely."
"I am," Margaret said, without hesitation. "I have never had a tool that makes good thinking more productive. I have never been able to explore a problem space this quickly, test an approach this cheaply, or move from idea to working implementation this fast. For a developer who loves the craft — and I do love the craft — this is an extraordinary moment to be working."
"Even though it writes the code."
"It writes some of the code. I decide what to build and why. I define the problem clearly enough to be solvable. I review what it produces with everything I know. I catch what it misses. I make the call." She smiled — a rare, full one. "The best parts of the job are still mine. The tedious parts have an excellent assistant. I fail to see the tragedy."
Timothy laughed — a genuine one this time, the kind that meant something had released.
"Skill equals opportunity," he said.
"It always has," Margaret said. "And right now, the developers who are building real skill with these tools are accumulating opportunity at a rate that should make everyone else pay attention." She opened her notebook. "Which is rather the point of this entire series."
Outside the library windows, London was going about its day. Inside, two developers were going about theirs — one of them slightly less worried than he had been the day before.
