Google's Med-Palm 2 - Medical Chatbot Performs at Expert Level Now

Google Announces New Health Technologies

At its annual event called “The Check Up,” Google announced new health initiatives and partnerships. The Google Health team provided updates on upcoming features in search, tools for building health apps, and the latest research in artificial intelligence-powered health.

During the event, Google discussed its partnerships to develop AI-assisted ultrasounds, cancer treatment, and tuberculosis screenings. However, the highlight of the event was the discussion of the latest version of Google’s medical large language model called Med-Palm.

Provides High Quality Medical Responses

Med-Palm was first introduced late last year and is designed to provide high-quality responses to medical questions. The first version of the technology was the first AI system to receive a passing score on multiple-choice style questions similar to those used in U.S. medical licensing exams.

Med-Palm 2 Performs at Expert Level Now

Google announced that the second iteration of Med-Palm, Med-Palm 2, consistently performed at an “expert” level on medical exam questions. Med-Palm 2 has reached over 85% accuracy, scoring 18% higher than its earlier version.

Answers Are Continuing to Improve

The company is also testing Med-Palm’s answers against responses from real doctors and clinicians to evaluate its factual accuracy, bias, and potential for harm. During the event, Dr. Alan Karthikesalingam, a research lead at Google Health, showed controlled examples of how Med-Palm 2 might answer questions such as “what are the first warning signs of pneumonia?” and “can incontinence be cured?” In some cases, Med-Palm 2’s answers were on par or even more detailed than the answers provided by clinicians. However, in other cases, Med-Palm 2’s responses were not as accurate.

Med-Palm Chatbot Rollout Might Be a While

Karthikesalingam emphasized the importance of innovating responsibly and in a controlled environment given the sensitive nature of medical information. He said that it could be a while before this technology is available to the average person.

Tremendous Potential of Med-Palm Chatbot

Google plans to continue working with researchers and experts on Med-Palm and will share more updates about it in the future. According to Karthikesalingam, the potential of the technology is tremendous, but it’s crucial to explore real-world applications in a responsible and ethical manner.
