API for ChatGPT and Whisper Speech to Text

OpenAI, the renowned AI research organization, has announced an API for its ChatGPT and Whisper speech-to-text tech, allowing third-party developers to integrate the technology into their products and services.



Can Be Used for More Than Chat

The ChatGPT API can be used for more than just creating an AI-powered chat interface, according to OpenAI, which says that its new model family, gpt-3.5-turbo, is the “best model for many non-chat use cases.”


Uses Tokens

OpenAI is offering 1,000 tokens for $0.002, which it claims is ten times cheaper than its existing GPT-3.5 models. However, the token system means that sending one snippet of text for the API to respond to could cost several tokens.


API Converts Text Into Tokens

To use the ChatGPT API, developers can send a snippet of text to the system, and the API will break it up into tokens, blocks of text that the system uses to predict what text it should output next. OpenAI provides a tool to check how many tokens a given string of text will require, and says that one token generally corresponds to approximately four characters in English.


Gives Users More Control Over Bots

For businesses running a large amount of data through the ChatGPT API, OpenAI is offering a dedicated instance of the technology that gives users more control over the model they're using, how long they want it to take to respond to requests, and how long conversations with the bot can be.

OpenAI has also announced a new API for its Whisper speech-to-text model, which it says can be used to transcribe or translate audio at a cost of $0.006 per minute. While the Whisper model is open source, OpenAI says that it has more powerful hardware than most businesses, making its API a better choice for businesses looking for a quick turnaround or needing to do transcription on lower-powered devices like phones.


Customers Have Control Over Their Data

To improve user confidence in its technology, OpenAI is introducing a change to its developer terms of service, whereby it won't use data submitted through the API to train its models unless customers explicitly allow that usage. The company is shifting from an opt-out to an opt-in policy, which could help alleviate concerns about putting proprietary information into the bot.
