DeepMind Aims to Challenge ChatGPT with New Chatbot Project
A New Chatbot Called Gemini
In a bid to surpass OpenAI's renowned language model, ChatGPT, DeepMind, the research lab owned by Google, is developing a new chatbot called Gemini. According to Wired, DeepMind is drawing inspiration from AlphaGo, their AI system that achieved the remarkable feat of defeating a professional human player in the complex game of Go. By integrating techniques from AlphaGo, DeepMind aims to create a chatbot that not only rivals but potentially surpasses the capabilities of ChatGPT.
Problem-Solving Abilities
Gemini is expected to possess problem-solving abilities, textual analysis skills, and strategic planning capabilities, as highlighted by DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis in an interview with Wired's Will Knight. Hassabis mentioned that Gemini would combine the strengths of AlphaGo-style systems with the impressive language capabilities of large models. Moreover, DeepMind is working on introducing novel innovations that promise to be significant in this endeavor.
Reinforcement Learning Techniques
Knight speculates that Gemini will leverage reinforcement learning techniques, which have proven effective in enhancing language models. Reinforcement learning involves rewarding the AI system for desired behaviors and penalizing undesired ones, allowing it to learn appropriate responses in various situations. DeepMind, with its expertise in reinforcement learning demonstrated by the success of AlphaGo, aims to apply these insights to the field of generative AI.
Upcoming Release of Sparrow Chatbot
It is worth noting that Gemini is not DeepMind's first venture into language models. Last year, they introduced Sparrow, a chatbot specifically designed to provide safer and more appropriate answers compared to other language models. DeepMind's CEO, Hassabis, revealed plans for a possible private beta release of Sparrow this year. However, it remains uncertain whether those plans are still on track.
Gemini Is DeepMind's Most Ambitious Chatbot Project
Gemini represents DeepMind's most ambitious project in the language model space thus far, as per early reports. The Information reported earlier this year that Gemini, initiated due to the shortcomings of Google's chatbot project called Bard in keeping up with ChatGPT, has direct involvement from key Google executives, including Jeff Dean, the company's senior AI research executive.
The competition for dominance in the generative AI sector is heating up, driven by substantial investor and customer interest. According to Grand View Research, the generative AI market, encompassing text-analyzing AI like Gemini, is projected to reach a value of $109.37 billion by 2030, signifying a remarkable growth rate of 35.6% from 2030.
