ChatGPT Development—Shifting from Plugins to GPTs

ChatGPT Plugins Being Phased Out

ChatGPT plugins, once essential add-ons for enhancing the capabilities of OpenAI's ChatGPT AI-powered large language model (LLM), are being phased out in favor of Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPT). Starting March 19, the installation of new plugins and initiation of new conversations via existing ones will cease, though ongoing plugin interactions will remain active until April 9, allowing users a transition period.

It's Simpler to Create GPTs

The shift from plugins to GPTs comes as developers find it simpler to create GPTs, reflecting a preference among both users and developers for the latter, evident from the thousands of GPTs compared to the limited number of plugins. GPTs match plugins in functionality and introduce new features requested by users.

GPTs Are Self-Sufficient AI Models

ChatGPT Plugins facilitated direct interaction with external services and APIs, extending ChatGPT's abilities beyond its inherent functionalities and allowing for customized experiences. Conversely, GPTs are self-sufficient AI models capable of generating content, answering queries, and more, without relying on external data sources. They offer built-in capabilities like browsing and image creation, support a broader range of tasks, and incorporate advancements in AI for improved performance. Additionally, the GPT Store enables access to specialized models for specific tasks, further enhancing the utility of GPTs over plugins.

Gives Users an Improved Experience

This transition underscores a significant evolution in AI-driven tools, promising users an improved experience with enhanced capabilities and ease of use.
