Sora Text-to-Video Editor Will Be Available Later This Year

OpenAI's Sora Set for Public Release

OpenAI is gearing up to release its groundbreaking text-to-video generator, Sora, to the public later this year. Mira Murati, OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer, revealed in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that the launch is anticipated within the year, potentially in just a few months. Sora, known for producing highly realistic video scenes from text prompts, was first introduced in February and initially offered exclusively to a select group of professionals like visual artists, designers, and filmmakers. Despite its limited availability, Sora-generated content has found its way onto various online platforms.

Enhancements and Future Plans

With the public release, OpenAI plans to enhance Sora by adding audio capabilities and editing functionalities. These improvements aim to make the generated scenes more lifelike and provide users with tools to correct inaccuracies in AI-created content. The goal is to transform Sora into a versatile tool that fosters creativity and precision in content creation.

Training Data and Operational Costs

Murati was reticent about the specifics of the data used to train Sora, mentioning only that it consisted of publicly available or licensed data, including content from Shutterstock due to a partnership. The operational costs of Sora are notably higher compared to DALL-E, OpenAI's AI text-to-image model. However, OpenAI is committed to making Sora accessible at competitive prices similar to DALL-E upon its release.

Addressing Misinformation Concerns

The potential for generative AI tools like Sora to be used in creating misinformation is a growing concern. OpenAI intends to implement measures similar to DALL-E's policies, such as prohibiting the generation of public figures' images and adding watermarks to videos. These steps are designed to help distinguish AI-generated content from genuine material, although the effectiveness of watermarks as a deterrent to misuse is still under discussion.
