The Reality of ChatGPT Usage - It's Not As Widespread As You Think

The Buzz Around Generative AI

Generative AI has become a buzzword in the tech industry, with companies like Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, and the current leader OpenAI making headlines with their innovations and attracting billions in investments over the past two years. Despite this significant attention and financial backing, the actual usage of these AI products, particularly OpenAI's flagship product, ChatGPT, paints a different picture.


Survey Highlights Usage Gaps

A recent survey by YouGov, conducted for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, highlights the discrepancy between the hype and real-world usage. The survey, conducted in six countries between March and April 2024, reveals that even the youngest respondents, aged 18 to 24, are not frequent users of ChatGPT:


Usage statistics for the 18-24 age group:

Daily usage:         9%
Weekly usage:     18%
Monthly usage:   12%
Once or twice:     17%
Never used:         44%


Age Discrepancy in AI Usage

The usage gap widens with age. Among those over 55, a striking 84% have never used ChatGPT.  In comparison, 13 to 15% of respondents in other age groups have tried it at least once or twice. Regular usage, defined as weekly consultations, drops significantly with age:


Other age groups (once or twice):        13-15%
25-34 age bracket (at least weekly):    19%
45-54 age bracket (at least weekly):     9%
55+ age bracket (have never used):      84%


Tech Corporations and AI Partnerships

Despite this, major tech corporations continue to develop their large language models. Microsoft and Apple have partnered with OpenAI to enhance their products, leveraging OpenAI's advancements in generative AI. OpenAI itself has recently been valued at $80 billion, making it the third-highest-valued unicorn globally, following ByteDance ($225 billion) and SpaceX ($150 billion), according to CB Insights.


Bridging the Gap Between Hype and Usage

The survey underscores a critical point: while generative AI is a hot topic and a focal point for investments, its adoption among the general population is still limited. The difference between the hype generated by tech corporations and venture capitalists and the reality of everyday usage is stark. As these technologies evolve, it will be interesting to see if and how they become more integrated into daily life for a broader demographic.
